Check out our interview session below!

Could you tell us about yourself?

Hi, my name is Jade and I love all creative things! I make fun handwritten fonts and cute graphics under my store named Naughty Pen. It’s been such a joy creating these digital assets for others to use! I also love gouache painting, modern calligraphy and crafting accessories with polymer clay when I have extra time.

How long have you been in this industry?

I’ve been in this industry for about 1 – 3 years

When did you know you wanted to pursue designing and start selling it?

It started out when the pandemic hit last year. My fiancé had gifted me an iPad and Apple Pencil for Christmas and I’ve been using this as my main tool to illustrate digital artworks ever since. Since I had extra free time on top of my day job working as a designer, I thought why not try to create these into sellable digital assets on marketplaces such as THJ, Creative Fabrica, etc. So I opened up my own stores and voila, it just kept rolling! I started off with drawing clipart, then I ventured into the world of font making – and I never looked back!

What inspires you the most? Where do you get your inspiration?

My cats really inspire me to illustrate on a daily basis. I usually get my inspiration from local artists or even international illustrators whom I’ve discovered through social platforms like Pinterest and Youtube.

Are you a traditional or digital artist? What are your preferred mediums to create your designs and graphics?

I do a mix of both! I honestly enjoy sketching on paper, and then transferring it to digital (Procreate & Photoshop) to do the outlines, coloring, and further fine-tuning. My preferred mediums would be gouache paint for traditional and Procreate app for digital illustrating.

Could you describe your design style?

Fun vibrant pastels with a bit of its kooks and quirks, I think?

What is your favorite part of the designing process?

Outlining a sketch and picking a color palette.

Have you ever experienced creative blocks before? How did you handle it?

Of course, I think all artists/designers will experience creative blocks. I will take a break from trying to force-create anything. I’ll play with my cats, exercise or watch a movie to unwind. If there wasn’t a lockdown, I’d be going out for sure!
