Graphic Designer Of The Week: katieromanoff_art | TheHungryJPEG

Another week, another awesome designer is brought to TheHungryJPEG. For this week, we have Katie, the owner of katieromanoff_art who loves creating cute and engaging patterns. It has been more than 5 years since she started to design yet she’s definitely still into it! Let’s get to know Katie more from this interview.

Could you tell us about yourself?

Hi! I’m Katie and I’m a left handed graphic designer and illustrator. Currently I focus on creating simple and colorful vector illustrations and patterns. I’ve been drawing as long as I  can remember and it’s been quite a journey to get to this point. Can’t wait to see what is ahead of the road! Outside of work, I enjoy things like good food, music, books, movies and yoga. My favorite season is spring and I’d choose mountains over ocean every time!

How long have you been in this industry?

I have been in this industry for about 5 years and above.

When did you know you wanted to pursue designing and start selling it?

While working as a graphic designer at a local print shop, I was looking for a creative outlet where I could express myself freely without briefs and deadlines. Creating digital illustrations gave me the freedom and joy of doing what I love.

What inspires you the most? Where do you get your inspiration?

I strongly believe you can find inspiration everywhere and you just have to look for it. The most inspiring things for me are nature, cities and art in any shape or form (photography, cinema, architecture etc.)

Are you a traditional or digital artist? What are your preferred mediums to create your designs and graphics?

I’m a digital artist, I love the sense of control that I get when drawing digitally. But I have to say that I prefer doing my sketches on paper.

Could you describe your design style?

Design style is a forever changing and evolving thing but as for today I’d say it’s simple, fun and colorful. I prefer brighter colors and naive shapes; something that translates curiosity and expresses love to the outside world.

What is your favorite part of the designing process?

My favorite part is probably the beginning of a project, when the idea is born and you decide what it’s gonna be and sketch. But at the same time this part is the most challenging one because you’re not sure yet if everything will work out in the end. Also I love… no, LOOOVE making patterns, it’s just so much fun!

Have you ever experienced creative blocks before? How did you handle it?

Unfortunately as many fellow creators I’ve experienced creative blocks. The most difficult thing about it is to figure out if I’m actually really really tired and I have to give myself a break or it is just my brain being lazy and I have to sit myself down and start drawing something, anything.

If it’s the first I just do nothing for a couple of days, eat, watch silly movies and after that I get the energy to create again. If it’s the second, work usually starts flowing after an hour of forcing myself to draw.
