SVG Designer Of The Week: Crafty Mama Studios | TheHungryJPEG

Crafty Mama Studios store on TheHungryJPEG is known for her vibrant and warm SVG designs specifically for Christmas. This time around, THJ would like to share about Shena, the backbone of Crafty Mama Studios who’s into Christmas and farmhouse vibes more than anyone else in the crafting scene. Learn more about Shena and her designing journey through our interview session below.

Could you tell us about yourself?

My name is Shena, I’m a wife to Matt and a mom to three boys (the youngest of which is a senior in high school!) I was a grade school teacher for years, when I decided I’d like to stay home and to be able to spend more time with my family. We all love traveling and road trips around the states. One thing that I think stands out about me is my love for CHRISTMAS!!! Every year, I would go all out in decorating and put up 10-15 full sized Christmas trees. I’m not sure if there’s anyone who loves Christmas the way I do!!

How long have you been in this industry?

I’ve been in this industry for about 5 years and above.

When did you know you wanted to pursue designing and start selling it?

After leaving teaching, I knew that although I wanted to be home to have more time, I would still need to stay busy. I bought a Silhouette and started creating projects for painted blocks, which then turned into painted signs. My friends pushed me to start selling them, so I started in local craft shows.

Eventually, I started selling my physical products online and my husband was able to quit his job and work with me. We made physical farmhouse signs for five years and all the while, I kept thinking when I was designing these signs, I should start selling the files that I’ve already designed! That took off and now we’re not making the physical signs anymore and we’re able to spend our days designing new files.

What inspires you the most? Where do you get your inspiration?

My inspiration comes from a variety of places. Our travels have taken us to meet so many people and their cultures. I also love hiking and doing outdoor activities. Right now, my biggest inspiration is coming from the farmhouse trends. I love the simple, muted colors, and the idea of a more simplistic lifestyle.

Are you a traditional or digital artist? What are your preferred mediums to create your designs and graphics?

I’m 100% digital! I can’t even draw a stick figure on paper, lol! I use Adobe Illustrator pretty exclusively for design.

Could you describe your design style?

My personal design style is more to the farmhouse. I just love everything about it!

What is your favorite part of the designing process?

The favorite part of design for me, is the brainstorming part. Before I start designing, I have a general theme of what I’m going for, then I scour my brain, the internet, and the world around me for ideas. I’ll make a big idea board on my computer that I draw from as I’m designing. Seeing the board gets me fired up to finish the project!

Have you ever experienced creative blocks before? How did you handle it?

I can’t imagine any designer NOT experiencing creative blocks! Typically, when I do, I like to go for a walk. We have a state park right outside of our little town where my husband and I will go out on a trail and talk about what we’re working on and bounce ideas off each other. Or sometimes we don’t talk about work at all and just let our conversation be light and fun. Once we get back, we’re both usually refreshed and ready to start again!

Do you have any advice or tips for future graphic designers out there?

I have always been a big advocate for just doing what you love! Find your style, find your inspiration…there are people out there who will love what you make. Just have that confidence in yourself to give it a go. Take lots of classes to learn, and never stop!

If there is something you wish The Hungry JPEG could do for you, tell us.

The biggest thing I wish THJ could do is give me the ability to change the position of pictures. My shop is starting to look disheveled because the pictures don’t match. I’ve got new main pictures for all my products, but can’t really afford the time to delete and upload all new. If I could just stick the new main pic in and put it as the first pic, that would help tremendously!
