Could you tell us about yourself?

Hi. I’m Mylana, an illustrator and pattern designer living in Prague, Czech Republic.

I create cute and cozy designs inspired by nature. During my free time I like to knit, grow flowers and vegetables on my balcony, and also I like weekend mountain hiking in all seasons.

How long have you been in this industry?

I have been in this industry for about 5 years and above.

When did you know you wanted to pursue designing and start selling it?

10 years ago, I used to work as a graphic designer and created outdoor advertisements, brochures and flash banners. But then I felt that the advertising field was not my calling. As far as I worked mostly from the office, I needed a little more freedom. Along with my main job, I’ve started to create illustrations for microstocks. Few years later, I left my job as a designer, switched entirely to my drawings and never regretted it.

What inspires you the most? Where do you get your inspiration?

Nature inspires me the most. During my free time, I often walk in the forest or on the outskirts of the city, along quiet village streets. I like to observe how plants change their colors depending on the season, autumn misty mornings in the mountains and cherry blossoms in spring. I also enjoy the festive atmosphere, so almost all my illustrations and patterns are somehow connected to holidays.

Are you a traditional or digital artist? What are your preferred mediums to create your designs and graphics?

I’m mostly a digital artist. I start with sketches on paper, but then it’s more convenient for me to continue using Illustrator, where I can quickly change the color and composition.

Could you describe your design style?

I can say my design style is cutesy with a slightly cartoon style. Simple joy is close to me. For example, sometimes I collect colorful autumn leaves in the forest, or enjoy the sun on a warm day. So I try to convey this childish naivety in my designs.

What is your favorite part of the designing process?

First of all it’s the selection of the color palette that will create the mood. I like the process of creating the kit itself and the moment when all patterns and cards fit together with one idea, but at the same time they are slightly different. Nevertheless they look together as one finished design.

Have you ever experienced creative blocks before? How did you handle it?

Sure. Sometimes this can be caused by fatigue. In this case, walking for an hour or two helps me to take a fresh look at the illustration.

I also find it very useful to create a to-do list and write my plan. So I can free my head from any distractive thoughts and focus on the main tasks. At the same time, I tend to find motivation in completing items from the list.
