Could you tell us about yourself?

Hi there! I’m Kaitlynn from KA Designs. I live in a small town in Pennsylvania. I design and sell font files as a full-time designer and I absolutely love what I do!

How long have you been in this industry?

I have been in this industry for about 5 years and above.

When did you know you wanted to pursue designing and start selling it?

I have always loved hand lettering and when I finally realized I could turn my own handwriting into fonts, I was hooked! I try to create fonts that are fun and inspiring – but also useful to other creators. Prior to design, I spent a lot of time teaching in elementary classrooms.

Throughout time, I noticed a lot of outdated books and teaching materials. I started to design my own classroom resources and from there I began to create fonts to go with them – quickly realizing how much I enjoyed making each and every letter. Typing that first word and seeing each letter come to life will always be my favorite part of the process!

What inspires you the most? Where do you get your inspiration?

I get my inspiration from so many different places! Sometimes, it will be a page from magazines or blogs, a post on my Instagram feed or a Pinterest article. Every so often, I find inspiration from just visiting TheHungryJPEG and scrolling through the designs. There are so many talented designers here!  After spending some time on the website, I am always ready to finish the project I’ve been putting off or start on a brand new design!

Are you a traditional or digital artist? What are your preferred mediums to create your designs and graphics?

I am a digital artist. I love my iPad Pro and Apple pencil! I mostly do all of my design work directly from my iPad and then finish up the design process in various programs on my computer.

Could you describe your design style?

This is a tough one! I feel like I go through a lot of different phases in my style. I would describe my overall style to be primarily a mix between modern and crafty. I really love the look of modern calligraphy so I try to incorporate that into my script fonts, which are my favorite to create! Lately, I’ve been trying to branch out and explore some styles that are new to me – such as traditional / editorial and retro designs.

What is your favorite part of the designing process?

My favorite part of the design process would have to be when everything starts to come together. When I make my fonts, I usually have an idea or theme in mind but once the font is complete, I love watching it come to life! The font takes on a personality of its own and it is so fun to create mockups that will hopefully inspire others with ways to use it in their own designs!

Have you ever experienced creative blocks before? How did you handle it?

I think that most designers have experienced creative blocks from time to time. One of my favorite ways to get through it is to take a break and design just for fun or for myself. It’s not often that I do that anymore so when I get the chance, it always sparks new ideas for future projects to work on!

Kaitlynn’s Top Pick from KA Designs

Do you have any advice or tips for future graphic designers out there?

One of my biggest tips would be to be patient. Take the time to learn the skills and practice, practice, practice! Most of the skills that I’ve learned, I’ve taught myself. Whether it was from reading articles, watching tutorials, studying different programs and tools – you name it, I’ve tried it!  Just as with anything in life – if you have the will and the passion, you can be successful!  Don’t give up!

If there is something you wish The Hungry JPEG could do for you, tell us.
